Specialty Antenatal Clinic
Antenatal Surgical Counselling Clinic
The upcoming birth of a child is usually filled with joy and anticipation. When a gynaecologist or sonologist tells an expecting mother that there may be a concern on the baby’s scan, it can understandably cause immense anxiety and distress.
An antenatal consultation with a pediatric surgeon is not required for every pregnancy. It is advised only when an ultrasound suggests a possible anomaly. Importantly, meeting a pediatric surgeon does not automatically mean your baby will need surgery.
An antenatal consult is simply a detailed discussion with would-be parents about:
The nature of the anomaly
Whether it is minor or major
Whether there is any real danger to the baby
What to expect during the remainder of pregnancy
What care may be required after birth
It also involves coordinated planning with the entire care team, the gynaecologist, neonatologist, perinatologist, and pediatric surgeon, so that delivery and newborn care are well organised.
The goal of this meeting is clarity, preparation, and reassurance, helping parents move from fear of the unknown to informed confidence.
