Specialty Stoma Clinic
Caring for a child with a stoma can feel overwhelming at first. With the right guidance, training, and support, families quickly gain confidence in day-to-day care.
What is a Stoma?
A stoma is a small, surgically created opening on the surface of the abdomen. It allows stool or urine, or in some cases provides a route for feeding, when the normal pathway is not possible.
A stoma may be temporary or permanent, depending on the child’s condition.
Types of Stoma
Gastrostomy
A gastrostomy is an opening made from the stomach to the surface of the abdomen to provide nutrition directly into the stomach.
It is commonly advised when:
A child is unable to gain weight with oral feeding
There is swallowing difficulty
There is severe gastro-esophageal reflux
Long-term nutritional support is needed
It may sometimes be performed along with a fundoplication (a procedure that reduces severe reflux).
Types of Gastrostomy
Feeding Tube (long tube): A tube that protrudes outside the abdomen
Gastrostomy Button: A low-profile device that sits flush with the skin and is opened only during feeding
We prefer using a gastrostomy button in most cases, as it is more comfortable, discreet, and has a lower risk of blockage or accidental dislodgement.
Intestinal Stoma
An intestinal stoma allows stool to pass through an opening on the abdomen.
Jejunostomy
Opening from the jejunum (part of the small intestine), usually for feeding purposes.
Ileostomy
Opening from the ileum (small intestine) through which stools pass.
Colostomy
Opening from the colon (large intestine) through which stools pass.
These may be required in conditions such as:
Absent anus (anorectal malformations)
Hirschsprung disease
Intestinal perforation (hole in the intestine)
Severe intestinal infection
Other congenital or acquired intestinal conditions
